If you want to break the cycle during half term, here are some cheap, screen-free activities.

BUILD A CANAL: The Canal and River Trust (canalrivertrust.org.uk) have some brilliant ideas on their website. From waterside bingo to building your very own canal sandbox, its tasks are a bit more out of the box than I’ve seen elsewhere.

WRITE IT UP: This is the perfect time to get creative juices flowing and encourage them to sit down with a pen and paper. It always help to have a goal, so start by heading to schoolreadinglist.co.uk, which advertises writing competitions for all different ages and how to enter them.
